His Girl Friday

1.    By 1929 Silent film was history, which gave directors overall control or multi level artistic contribution to their films. However now that sound was the new thing the issue now became the film content which revived the creation of the MPPDA (MOTION PICTURE PRODUCERS AND DISTRIBUTORS OF AMERICA).  Which then led film to needing the Production Seal of Approval, movies certified from the Production Code Administration allowing the studio to display a "Seal of Approval" on the film's release prints.  This code changed the roles of women in film. Pre code women were allowed to have sexual desire, nudity, dance part etc. Post code the women get out of gowns and into tailored suits. His Girl Friday was a film made Postcode so specifically relating the leading lady role there is a noticeably masculine but femine essence about Hildy that has a lot to do with what was going on during that era of film history.

3.    This Amc review discusses how the gender swap brought an entirely new angle to film “making it more than a satirical view and social commentary on the operation of a newsroom under the management of a hard-boiled, smart-alec managing editor Walter Burns, and providing an additional feminine-romance angle.”

4.    What was appealing about this movie first was the timing. To know that this movie was done postcode I became aware through out the movie how strong, smart and masculine the leading lady Hildy was presented. I love how the dialogue was right on top of each other; although sometimes as the viewer you would miss some of the words I notice and have an appreciation for the writers   choosing to present the dialogue in this manner.  I believe this presentation of the dialogue emulates how humans in the real world communicate with one another. Sometimes we don’t listen and we miss what was said or we over talk someone. So I thought that was a brilliant idea.
