Grapes of Wrath

1.    The Grapes of Wrath directed by John ford in 1940 was based on the John Steinback novel Grapes of Wrath. Ford won an Academy Award for best director. The story takes place in 1930’s during the Depression Era.  The Grapes of Wrath can be said to be themed on the importance of family, religion vs. natural morality, love of land social and economic injustice.  Greg Toland whom also shot Citizen Kane did the cinematography for this film. Shooting beautifully overcast skies and bleak exteriors.

3.     This review gives you a very detailed summary of the story line. Then it discusses how this film was  the most popular left-leaning, socialistic-themed film of pre-World War II Hollywood.”  The article talks about how the title of the film was taken from the Battle Hymn of the Republic, by Juilia Howe. Later they go on to discuss how on the screen the film honestly and realistically recreates the socio economic impact of the Great Depression.

4.     What I love most about this movie is the themes presented through out the film. Out of the many themes and lessons that could be learned from this film I was most impressed with the theme of Human dignity and spirit in face of adversity.  As a view my favorite movies and or characters in movies are usually when characters have to obstain the unimaginable.  So to have this family whom even through out facing adversity still had dignity and was reminded by the mom the importance of family was most touching to me.
